Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), like CRM, has multiple definitions. Manufacturing firms use complex ERP solutions to manage inventory, production, and logistics (delivery) in addition to more common functions including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and General Ledger.
When selecting an ERP solution, there are several areas to consider.
- Business Complexity - The most expensive ERP solution may not be the one that is best for your organization. Many businesses have been able to leverage products like Intuit's QuickBooksTM for effectively managing their financial and accounting needs. However, manufacturing organizations will benefit from ERP solutions that provide for inventory, production, and logistics management. Professional service and Field Service firms benefit most from a product with a tightly integrated Time and Expense solution.
- Order Management - Every organization needs to record orders and track outstanding receivables. Companies that sell complex products may benefit from a solution with order management that supports advanced product configuration. Others with less complex products may benefit from an ERP solution that provides the ability for customers to place orders over the web, or provide the ability to import orders from 3rd party partners or applications.
- Reporting - Every organization also needs to determine the complexity of their reporting needs. For some organizations, generating client invoices and statements, checks for business expenses, and company performance reports (balance sheet, P&L, etc) may be sufficient. The more complex the business, the greater the need for more advanced reporting support.
